The medieval town of Bevagna recently hosted an extraordinary gathering of young minds and innovative thinkers at the Social Hackathon Umbria 2024 (#SHU2024). Organized by the European Grants International Academy (EGInA), in collaboration with the Istituto Superiore di Sanità – Centro Nazionale Malattie Rare and the Crowddreaming Hackademy Lab Foligno 4D (CRHACK LAB F4D), this event successfully empowered participants to develop digital solutions that support the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) outlined in the 2030 Agenda.
From July 4th to 7th, 2024, the historic streets of Bevagna came alive with the energy of over 300 participants from around the world. The event focused on three core themes — physical, mental, and social well-being —reflecting the holistic approach to innovation that #SHU2024 aimed to promote.
- From Preparation to Creation: The Journey of #SHU2024
The hackathon marked the final phase of an extensive training program provided by the Social Hackademy Lab, which prepared students and young professionals from across Europe for the intense challenge ahead. Participants formed co-design teams, each consisting of up to eight members led by an experienced team manager. Together, they worked alongside representatives from selected organizations, known as «solution givers», to develop digital projects with meaningful social impact.
Weeks before the event, the most promising ideas were selected, setting the stage for the hackathon. Over 48 hours of non-stop creativity and collaboration, teams brought these ideas to life, crafting pitches, prototypes, and even finished products. These efforts were then presented to a jury of experts, showcasing the participants’ dedication and effort.
- Celebrating Success
#SHU2024 not only showcased the potential of digital innovation but also highlighted the power of collaboration in creating a more sustainable and inclusive future. Thanks to SHU2024, tradition and modernity came together to spark ideas that will continue to inspire long after the hackathon has ended.
